Events will mark 40th anniversary
USI will celebrate 40 years as a public higher education institution in September. The University opened on September 15, 1965.
President H. Ray Hoops and the USI Board of Trustees will host a 40th Anniversary Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Friday, September 9, in Carter Hall in the University Center.
“The 40th anniversary dinner will allow the University and the community at large to pay tribute to the legislators who have ensured the expansion of funding, academic programs, and physical facilities at USI. From its founding in 1965 until today, the southern Indiana bi-partisan legislative delegation has focused on meeting the very real higher education needs of this region. Our delegation is the envy of every other region of the state,” Hoops said.
Tickets are $40, and the University community and the public are welcome. For reservations, call the Office of Special Events at 812/464-1930.
The University will celebrate with several events on Thursday, September 15, the anniversary date. At 11 a.m., there will be a dedication ceremony for a flag display donated to Residence Life by VFW Post 1114 at the Fair Residence Life Office. A cornerstone and time capsule will be placed at the construction site of the new David L. Rice Library at 1:30 p.m.
“Someone suggested the cornerstone because the construction of the new library coincided with the 40th anniversary,” said Sherrianne Standley, vice president for Advancement. “The library is the heart of the campus, and if we’re going to have a cornerstone, the one building we would choose would be the library.”
The USI History Club and the staff of Library Services are collecting items for the time capsule. It could include items such as that day’s edition of the Evansville Courier and Press, an illustration of the proposed master plan, current recruitment brochures, an Eagle Access card, a copy of the anniversary edition of USI Magazine, and library-related materials.
Immediately following the cornerstone placement, there will be a birthday celebration for the University community in the University Center Mall, with birthday cake, ice cream, and entertainment by Rowan Tree, a Celtic group featuring Dan Craig, assistant professor of music.
The annual Founders Day Ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium in the Health Professions Center. The ceremony will honor 25-year employees John Baburnich, student records data manager in the Office of the Registrar; William Henderson, assistant professor of computer information systems; Doug Hubbell, associate professor of theatre; Joyce Lasher, senior payroll assistant in Human Resources; Rose Scruggs, library associate in Library Services; and Julia Yancey, manager of payroll in Human Resources.
