CelebrationweekEvents taking place from January through December 2015 will celebrate the University's 50th anniversary. Some are annual events, and others are signature events, planned specifically for the 50th anniversary. Together, these events emphasize the University of Southern Indiana's focus on shaping the future. The week of September 14-20, 2015 is our 50th Anniversary Celebration Week. We hope you will join us at one or several of the events that week. Other events throughout the year include a lecture series, alumni networking and reunion gatherings, student activities, art and theatre performances and historical displays in the community.

The studio art and design faculty members of the Art department will display their current creative endeavors at the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries January 15 – March 16, 2015 in a special 50th anniversary exhibit. Artworks ranging from wood sculpture to digital animation will be featured. The annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Luncheon features James D. Anderson Ph.D. , the Edward William and Jane Marr Gutsgell Professor of Education. His scholarship focuses broadly on the history of U.S. education, with specializations in the history of African American education in the South, the history of higher education desegregation, the history of public school desegregation and the history of African American school achievement in the 20th century. Evansville Museum Master Teachers Exhibit: Michael Aakhus

March 15 - May 3, 2015 | Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Science

In celebration of the University of Southern Indiana’s 50th Anniversary in 2015, current and emeritus art faculty members will serve as guest curators to exhibit their work along with the work of selected former students in a series of Main Gallery exhibitions at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Science. Through the “Master Teacher Series,” each faculty member is invited to curate his or her exhibition independently. An illustrated catalogue will be produced for each exhibition with an introduction written by the Master Teacher. In keeping with the museum’s 20-year tradition of having an annual artist in residence, each of the Master Teachers will serve as a 2015 artist in residence by conducting a one-day workshop tailored to their particular media. The museum is located at 411 Southeast Riverside Drive in Evansville, Indiana.

The Romain College of Business Innovative Speaker Series is a bi-annual event for both the University and Tri-State communities. Through its Innovative Speaker Series, the Romain College of Business strives to present a speaker who has displayed leadership and innovation in the world of business. Shaw Biology Lecture - Dr. William Schaffner

7 p.m., March 25, 2015 | Mitchell Auditorium, Health Professions Center

The 2015 speaker for the annual Shaw Biology Lecture is Dr. William Schaffner, professor of medicine and preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. An authority on vaccines, national policy and public health, Dr. Schaffner is a go-to expert for national media. He is known for translating health issues for public understanding. The lecture titled "Emerging Infectious Diseases: A Global Challenge" is at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 25 in Mitchell Auditorium in the Health Professions Center on USI's campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

45th Annual USI Juried Student Art

March 29 - May 3, 2015 | Kenneth P. McCutchan Art Center/Palmina F. and Stephen S. Pace Galleries

The Art department has displayed the best artwork of its students in an annual exhibition for the past 45 of USI’s 50 years. Matthew Gehring, a USI art alumnus and an artist and educator whose work is recognized nationally, will jury this year’s exhibit. Gehring will chose the artworks, award over $9,000 in scholarships, purchase and merit awards, and present a public lecture on March 19. The show will be on display at the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries March 29 – May 3, 2015. A free public opening reception for the exhibit will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, March 29, 2015 in the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries. The Student Government Association's annual T-shirt Swap will feature the USI 50th Anniversary! Bring any article of clothing from another university (shirt, pants, hats, etc.) to University Center West on April 6 – 10, 2015 and swap it for a new USI t-shirt. Flashback Exhibit

April 18 - May 29, 2015 | New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art

The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art will feature USI Faculty Michael Aakhus, Lenny Dowhie, William Leth, John McNaughton, Carolyn Roth and Kathryn Waters in a 1986 flashback exhibit. Their 1986 exhibit was the first USI/NHGCA faculty exhibition after USI assumed management of Historic New Harmony in 1985. For more information visit usi.edu/nhgallery.

USI Theatre Performance of Spring Awakening

April 22 - 26, 2015 | USI Teaching Theatre

Spring Awakening: A rock musical cowritten by Evansville native Steven Sater and based on the 19th century classic German play by Frank Wedekind will be presented. Spring Awakening explores the lives of adolescents as they seek to uncover the mysteries of their sexuality within a repressed environment. Originally banned in the 19th century, the play is now acknowledged a masterpiece although its themes continue to challenge audiences.  This musical version won Tony awards for Best Musical,  Book,  and Score, as well as multiple Drama Desk awards, Critics Circle Award, and a Grammy. From June 1 – August 31, 2015, USI art faculty emeritae and other former art faculty members will be display their art in a special exhibit in the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries. This exhibit will showcase the many former art educators who have contributed to the success of the USI Art program and its 1,075 graduates. There will be a free public closing reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, August 30, 2015 in the McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries.

Alumni Party on the Quad!

5 p.m., June 6, 2015 | University Quad

The USI Alumni Association invites you and your friends to campus for a Party on the Quad! Join fellow alumni, friends, faculty, staff and retirees for an enjoyable evening of live music and delicious food. Take advantage of this time to tour campus and spend time reminiscing with friends. The party will begin at 5 p.m. with music by Randy Pease, tours of campus, a caricature artist and games of corn hole. Guests will enjoy music by the Duke Boys from 7 to 10 p.m., a pig roast by Marx Barbeque beginning at 6 p.m. and a cash bar including selections from Tin Man and Carson’s Breweries. An illustrated catalogue will be produced for each exhibition with an introduction written by the Master Teacher. In keeping with the museum’s 20-year tradition of having an annual artist in residence, each of the Master Teachers will serve as a 2015 artist in residence by conducting a one-day workshop tailored to their particular media.
