The Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (SWI-AHEC), the sixth
health education center in Indiana since 2001, is a workforce
development program to assure an adequate and diverse healthcare
workforce in the future. The center is concerned with the development of
future generations of health care professionals, accessibility of
continuing education for health care professionals, and accessibility of
health care for the underserved populations of SWI-AHEC’s service area.
The center’s service area includes the counties of Daviess, Dubois,
Gibson, Knox, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick. The
center is located in the College of Nursing and Health Professions at
the University of Southern Indiana.
Jennifer Craig, the
director for SWI-AHEC,
developed a network of individuals and agencies within the region to
help identify and address workforce and health care needs. An advisory
council will grow from that network.
The inaugural meeting, held in early October, brought together partners
within the region to determine direction and oversight of the center.
