Lori
Grimm of Newburgh, Indiana, is the 2008 recipient of the
Distinguished Nursing Alumna Award presented by the USI Nursing Alumni
Society.
She is manager of quality and patient safety officer for Women’s
Hospital in Newburgh.
“What I enjoy about nursing is improving the lives of others. That’s why
I’m a nurse,” she said.
Allison Ingler, nurse manager in high-risk obstetrics at Women’s
Hospital, nominated Grimm for the award. Ingler is a member of the USI
Nursing Alumni Society.
She said, “Lori is a perfect role model for young nurses because she
cares very much about patients, patient safety, improving outcomes, and
the quality of care in general. She makes sure that we are meeting and
exceeding standards.”
Ingler also commended Grimm for her leadership and dedication to
reducing the incidence of birth trauma.
Grimm joined Women’s Hospital as the charge nurse in labor and delivery
when the hospital opened in 2001. She was named patient safety officer
in 2006 and manager of quality in 2007.
“We are at a crossroads in our country for change in health care,” Grimm
said, adding that she is pleased to be in a position that allows her to
have a part in providing safe, efficient, and effective care.
In 2005, Grimm completed the Patient Safety Academy offered by the
School of Nursing at Johns Hopkins University. The program is for
advanced practice nurses who lead safety initiatives in their
organizations.
Prior to joining Women’s Hospital, Grimm was associated with St. Mary’s
Medical Center as a nurse in labor and delivery. She completed a
bachelor’s degree in nursing at DePauw University in 1991 and earned a
master’s degree in nursing this year at USI. She completed the nursing
management and leadership track of the MSN program.
The Distinguished Alumna Award was presented October 21 at the annual
meeting of the USI Nursing Alumni Society.
