Commission Endorses Engineering Degree

The Indiana Commission for Higher Education has approved a resolution to bring a general engineering program to southern Indiana as early as next fall.

The new resolution calls for USI to work with Purdue University to offer a bachelor’s degree, either jointly or by one or both of the institutions.

The resolution also requests that the two universities develop a curriculum that will allow students to take two years at USI and then transfer to Purdue or University of Evansville for specialized engineering courses, and that Purdue should work with USI to eventually offer electrical and mechanical engineering programs.

USI President Dr. H. Ray Hoops called the move a positive development.

“The University of Southern Indiana believes that the provision of additional engineering education is essential to the continuing economic development of the southern region of the state,” he said. “We are committed to providing that service.”
