von Fuhrmann receives Cooper Award
|
|
Eric von Fuhrmann, associate professor of English,
has been named winner of the 2004 H. Lee Cooper Core Curriculum Teaching
Award.
Focusing exclusively on teaching, the award honors a USI faculty member
whose work in University Core courses has been especially creative and
successful in furthering UCC goals.
The award will officially be presented at the Fall Faculty and
Administrative Staff Meeting in August. It includes a generous stipend, a
plaque, and additional faculty development support.
In nominating von Fuhrmann, his colleague Dr. Stephen Sullivan,
associate professor of philosophy, wrote:
"Since the inception of the USI Core Curriculum Program in 1995, and also
for 30 years in its General Education predecessor, Professor Eric von
Fuhrmann has proven to be an outstanding educator of undergraduates.
"Students in his Humanities 211: Western Tradition in Humanities I, English
286: Classical Mythology, and English 386: World Mythology have found
themselves challenged to read, think, discuss, and learn - as much as or
more than ever before - by a passionate, demanding, and learned teacher with
a gift for holding their attention and bringing out the best in them."
Von Fuhrmann holds an M.A. from Southern Illinois University. He joined the
USI faculty in 1966.
As this year's winner, von Fuhrmann also will deliver a presentation to the
USI community during the 2004-05 academic year. Details will be released at
a later date.
The Cooper Award is named in honor of H. Lee Cooper, Evansville
philanthropist and long-time USI supporter.
