Federal Money Provides One-Way Road
Of the $9 million Congress approved for
economic development and job creation in the Evansville community, included
is $1.5 million to construct a perimeter roadway on the USI campus. The
federal money coupled with $2 million in state money received with
construction dollars for Rice Library will allow the University to re-route
most of the vehicular traffic from a four-lane boulevard which bisects the
campus to a new one-way road around the perimeter of the campus.
The existing University Boulevard, with classroom buildings to the west and
parking and student housing to the east, forces students, faculty, staff,
and visitors to walk across four lanes of traffic to reach their campus
destination. The funding will close the busy and sometimes dangerous
boulevard and will move traffic to the perimeter of the campus. The
perimeter loop road will provide access to parking areas and service roads
and would become the primary route for the campus shuttle bus service.
Construction of the western portion of the road has already been completed
with University and state funds. Construction is contingent upon the master
plan report.
An additional $75,000 of federal money was received to fund the Center for
Applied Research and Economic Development at USI. The center will enable the
University to contribute more actively to the general economic well being of
southwestern Indiana and the State to help grow jobs. The center will assist
business, industry, governmental agencies, and entrepreneurial groups in a
variety of applied research, technical assistance, development, and
educational and training activities. The University's expertise in a variety
of high-tech areas such as engineering, computer science and information
systems, radiologic and imaging sciences, life sciences, physical sciences,
earth sciences, communications, and e-commerce will be made available to
existing and prospective businesses. The center will be housed in Extended
Services.
President H. Ray Hoops expressed gratitude to U. S. Senator Richard G.
Lugar, U.S. Senator Evan Bayh, and U.S. Representative John Hostettler for
their work in securing the funding.
