Wolfe receives Cooper award
The University Core Council has announced that
Susan Smith Wolfe, associate professor
of German, has been named winner of the 2005 H. Lee Cooper Core
Curriculum Teaching Award.
In nominating Wolfe, Carol MacKay, chair
of the Foreign Language Department, wrote: "(Dr. Wolfe's) courses address
superbly core curriculum goals as she constantly reevaluates ways of
promoting critical and independent thinking, of broadening perspectives
across cultures, of inspiring students to search for answers, and of
preparing them to be responsible citizens."
The award will be officially presented at the Fall Faculty and
Administrative Staff Meeting in August. It includes a generous stipend, a
plaque, and additional monies for travel and related faculty development.
Focusing exclusively on teaching, the Cooper award honors a USI faculty
member whose work in University Core courses has been especially creative
and successful in furthering UCC goals.
As this year's winner, Wolfe also will deliver a presentation to the
University community during the 2005-06 academic year. Details will be
released at a later date.
Wolfe holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. She joined the USI
faculty in 1988.
The Cooper Award is named in honor of H. Lee Cooper, an Evansville
philanthropist and long-time USI supporter.
