Dean Named for School of Liberal Arts
The associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Texas State
University-San Marcos is set to assume the top leadership post in University
of Southern Indiana's School of Liberal Arts.
Dr. David Glassman's appointment as dean of the USI School of Liberal Arts
will be effective July 1.
"We are delighted that Dr. Glassman will be coming onboard as the new
Liberal Arts Dean," said Dr. Linda Bennett, provost and vice president for
Academic Affairs. "He has an outstanding record as a teacher-scholar and
solid administrative experience. I look forward to working with him."
Glassman, 50, has served as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts at
Texas State University-San Marcos since 2003. Texas State has an enrollment
of more than 26,000 students, and more than 3,700 of them major in liberal
arts. Roughly 48 percent of the credit hours earned at USI, where enrollment
is nearly 10,000, are through the University's School of Liberal Arts.
A professor of anthropology at Texas State since 1992, Glassman has served
as chair of the university's Department of Anthropology since 1997. Under
his leadership, the department completed three major strategic initiatives
by establishing a Master of Arts program with a major in anthropology, the
Center for Art and Symbolism in Ancient America, and the Center for
Archaeological Studies.
He also developed and implemented strategies for student retention,
increasing the diversity of students and faculty, and defining
student-learning outcomes.
"I think my best qualifications have to do with my experience in helping
academic organizations move to the next level through shared governance and
cooperation," Glassman said.
"I think my style of dealing with tough situations in a fair and equitable
manner has had great success in the past, and lastly, I'd probably say my
enthusiasm for education, particularly the liberal arts, is a driving force
behind my vision and my leadership."
The Minnesota native holds three degrees in anthropology: a Ph.D. and M.A.
from University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a B.A. from University of
Minnesota-Minneapolis. He also has certification as a diplomate of the
American Board of Forensic Anthropology.
Forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, primate studies, skeletal biology,
and human growth are among his major fields of interest.
An award-winning teacher, Glassman also has made numerous presentations at
professional meetings and as invited lectures. His work has been published
in many academic journals, and he is a reviewer for the American Journal of
Physical Anthropology, American Journal of Primatology, and Human Biology,
among other publications.
Glassman, who has one son, resides in San Marcos and anticipates relocating
to the Evansville area in June.
"What really sold me on USI is the collegiality of the faculty and
administration, and also the strong promise that seems to be there," he
said.
A University of Southern Indiana Search Committee began reviewing candidates
for the position of dean of the School of Liberal Arts in November. Dr. Iain
Crawford, former dean, left the University after accepting a position at
College of Wooster. Dr. Tom Wilhelmus, USI professor of English, is serving
as acting dean in the interim.
