BRIAN L. McGUIRE is the Associate Dean, MBA Director, and Professor of Accounting at the University of Southern Indiana.  He has a B.S. from the University of South Alabama, an MBA from the University of South Alabama, and a Ph.D. from the University of Central Florida (major field of concentration in accounting, with additional emphasis in information systems).  He is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Management Accountant, a Certified Business Manager, and a Certified Information Technology Professional, and he has professional experience in both public and corporate accounting.  He has served as an Administrator of a medical center, Director of Corporate Operations of a hospital holding company, and as a consultant in the health care field.  In addition, he has consulted numerous medical groups in the areas of accounting, reimbursement, fee schedules, information systems, and office administration.  He has also served as a consultant in several other areas, including an Activity-Based Costing Implementation Project, a High Technology Assessment Project, a Community Development Financial Institution Project, and most recently, as an expert witness in a Superior Court case in Indiana.

His dissertation, An Empirical Study of User Satisfaction with Accounting Information Systems in a Healthcare Environment, combined his interests in information systems and health services administration.  While completing his doctorate, he worked in the Intelligent Multimedia Applications Laboratory (IMAL) at the University of Central Florida, which was a project (funded by NASA) that integrated artificial intelligence (expert systems) with multimedia applications.

Dr. McGuire’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of cost accounting, health care administration, and accounting information systems.  He has been an active scholar, producing over 35 journal articles and over 45 proceedings while making over 65 presentations at national and international professional meetings.  His research has been published in numerous journals, including Strategic Finance, Management Accounting Quarterly, and the Journal of Cost Management, and he has received numerous research awards, including the 2007 “Lybrand Silver Medal" (Strategic Finance and Management Accounting Quarterly’s annual manuscript competition), and a 2001 and a 2002 “Lybrand Certificate of Merit” (given for excellence in contributing to the literature for the advancement of management accounting).  His research was also selected for inclusion in the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) 2007 Articles of Merit, given for the ten “articles of outstanding merit” (as selected by IFAC's Professional Accountants in Business Committee) as part of its annual “Award Program for Distinguished Contribution to the roles and domain of professional accountants in business.”  The ten previously published international articles address topics “that can assist professional accountants in business with their management, strategic and financial decision-making issues.”

Dr. McGuire has received numerous “Best Paper Awards” at national and international academic conferences, and he has made numerous presentations at national and international professional meetings.  In addition, he has served as the Program Chair for two international conferences (2002 and 2007) and he has served on additional program committees.  Furthermore, he has received numerous faculty awards from his college, including three faculty awards for service (given annually to the faculty member that most exemplifies excellence in service), a faculty award for research (given annually to the faculty member that most exemplifies excellence in research), and a faculty award for teaching (given annually to the faculty member that most exemplifies excellence in teaching).

Dr. McGuire has served on several international boards, including the Board of Directors of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), the Board of Directors of Beta Alpha Psi (BAP), and the Board of Regents of the Institute of Certified Management Accountants (ICMA).  The Institute of Management Accountants, with approximately 200 chapters and 60,000 members in the United States and abroad, is “the world's leading association for management accounting and finance professionals.”  Beta Alpha Psi, with approximately 265 chapters on college and university campuses and over 300,000 members initiated, is an international honorary organization “for financial information students and professionals that encourages and gives recognition to scholastic and professional excellence in the business information field.”  The Institute of Certified Management Accountants, with approximately 20,000 members in the United States and abroad, is a certification program that “objectively tests and validates expertise in areas essential to analyzing, managing and evaluating business solutions that contribute to the success of an organization.”  The ICMA is an affiliate of the Institute of Management Accountants.  He is currently the Chair of IMA’s External/Member Relations Committee (and an IMA board member) and BAP’s Director of Administration and Development (and a BAP board member).  He also serves on the regional and local levels of both organizations.

Dr. McGuire serves on numerous charitable and not-for-profit boards, and he is currently the President of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra (EPO), a multi-million dollar orchestra and the largest arts institution in the Tri-State Area (founded in 1934), which “is comprised of approximately eighty professional musicians, many of whom have graduated from the finest music schools in the country,” and approximately 180 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees.  In addition, he has served on several committees and task forces of various academic and professional organizations, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the American Accounting Association (AAA).  Furthermore, he is a member of several honorary organizations, including Beta Gamma Sigma, Beta Alpha Psi, and Phi Kappa Phi.

Dr. McGuire has served as a Consultant-Evaluator and a Systems Portfolio Appraiser for the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), a commission of the North Central Association (NCA) of Colleges and Schools, “which was founded in 1895 as one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States.”  He has also served as a Peer Review Team Member on numerous Business and Accounting Maintenance Visitation Teams for AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), which is the “premier accrediting agency of collegiate business schools and accounting programs worldwide.”

Dr. McGuire has been active in the Tri-State community, having held administrative posts in a number of community organizations.  For example, he has served in leadership positions for the Buffalo Trace Council (Boy Scouts of America), Downtown Evansville, Inc. (a division of the Growth Alliance of Greater Evansville), Girl Scouts of Raintree Council, Inc (an affiliate of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America), and the Southwest Indiana Workforce Development Steering Committee.

Dr. McGuire has been an active member of the USI campus.  On the university level, he has served as Chair of the Council of Department Chairs/Program Directors, Chair of the Student Affairs Committee, and Chair of the Honor Student Symposium Committee.  He has also served as a member of USI’s Administrative Appeals Committee, Graduate Council, University Core Curriculum Council, and Service Learning Committee.  In addition, he has served as a Faculty Representative in numerous USI initiatives, including participation in the Student Development Program's "First Class" sessions, the David Rice Library Building Expansion focus group, USI Scholars’ Day programs, USI’s Southern Honors programs, and USI’s Southern Hospitality Days.

Dr. McGuire has also been active on the college and department levels. On the college level, he has served as Chair of the College of Business Faculty, Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, Chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee, and Chair of the Instructional Resources Committee.  He also served as Co-Chair of the Research Improvement Committee and Co-Coordinator of the Faculty Research Seminars.  In addition, he has served on numerous search committees, including the College of Business’ Dean Search Committee and faculty search committees in the areas of Accounting, Finance, Computer Information Systems, and Business Law.  On the department level, he has served as Chair of the Department of Accounting and Business Law,    during which time the department experienced a significant increase (over 20%) in the number of majors.  He also served as Chair of the Strategic Planning & Assessment Committee, Chair of the Personnel Committee, Chair of the Instructional Resources Committee, and Chair of the Book Selection Committee.

Dr. McGuire is married and has two children, and he enjoys traveling (he has travelled to 46 states and 14 countries), boating, and hiking.  He has lived in several cities in various states, including Alabama and Florida, and he has lived in Indiana for the past thirteen years.
