The Economics and Finance Department offers undergraduate majors and minors in business education, economics, and finance.

Business Education
Students desiring to prepare for a career in teaching business subjects in grades 6 - 12 may complete a business education major program offered by the College of Business in cooperation with the Bower-Suhrheinrich College of Education and Human Services. The business education major is accredited by the Indiana State Department of Instruction and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Economics
The study of economics prepares students to use the tools of analytical reasoning in the discussion of the basic problems of modern societies.  Problems such as stability, fluctuations, affluence, poverty, inflation, unemployment, growth, and decay are presented and discussed within the framework of existing institutions of the advanced and underdeveloped worlds.

Major and minor programs in economics are designed to prepare students for careers in law, private business, government and to provide a solid foundation for graduate work in the social sciences.  The current available curriculum offers a balanced blending of analytical reasoning, critical discussion of current problems, and quantitative methods to be applied in the evaluation and stimulation of social change.

Students interested in economics may elect a major program leading to the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree or options combining teaching certification and a Bachelor of Science degree.  Students majoring in economics receive their degrees from the College of Liberal Arts.  The minor in economics is a good complement to a major in business, humanities, and the physical and social sciences.  Students majoring in business need only three additional economics courses to get a minor in economics.

Finance
The study of Finance is a growing field in the business curriculum.  Because of revolutionary changes in the legal environment and in technology, nation wide there is a great demand for students trained in finance.  This is especially true in Evansville and the Tri-State economy that boasts of a strong financial services industry.  Two of the largest bank holding companies in Indiana are headquartered here.  The message we get from our constituents, both employers and students, is that finance is a fast-changing dynamic industry with increasing opportunities for young people.

The finance major is designed to prepare graduates for careers in a variety of financial fields including banking, consumer finance, insurance, investments, and real estate.
