Consultation, Outreach and Referral

Consultation
Faculty, staff, parents, spouses, and friends are often concerned about a student. Counselors can make arrangements for a student to get counseling or refer the student to appropriate resources. We are available to consult with student organizations, faculty, and staff for:

-orientation to our services
-in-service training
-program planning and implementation
-conflict mediation
-assistance developing/locating accommodations for students with disabilities

Outreach
Work shops are available throughout the year at the request of members of the University community. Presentations are structured around the request of each group. Sample seminars include, but are not limited to, time management/study skills, eating disorders, gender issues, communication and self-esteem, grief resolution, substance abuse, and assertiveness training.

Referral
Referrals are made to external agencies and community mental health professionals for specialized treatment such as hospitalizations, medical treatment and exams, or medication, for long-term psychotherapy, and for more intensive treatment for situations such as substance abuse or eating disorders. Staff provide primary contact to the Southwestern Indiana Mental Health system, Deaconess Cross Pointe, The Lampion Center counseling services, ECHO Community Health Care, and to the Albion Fellows Bacon and YWCA women's centers for abuse and rape situations. Some of these referral sources provide free services, sliding-fee scale payments, or scholarships to help pay for services, and most accept insurance payments.

The Community Resource Guide, a publication of the United Way, is used by staff members in making community referrals. Students are encouraged to stop by the office to use the guide on an as-needed basis. Counselors are also available for consultations with faculty and staff about problem situations involving students, and for workshops and in-class presentations.

In addition, any student who feels an undiagnosed disability may be interfering with the ability to successfully complete a course or with learning potential, is encouraged to set-up an appointment with a counselor for referral to a community agency for diagnostic testing.
