Initial Field Experiences
Directions to Students for Initial Field Experience
- Review the Breeze presentation about the
Initial Field Experience program
- Complete one of two placement forms:
- Submit your placement form to your instructor by the due date, which is the Friday of the second week of classes each term. If you are taking more than one exploration phase course, you only need to submit one form.
- You will complete 12 hours of observation/participation for each exploration phase course. Therefore, if you are enrolled in two courses, you will complete 24 hours of field experience.
- The field experience must begin and end at the assigned times. This is a 10-week program, and you must visit the schools at least once a week for 10 weeks. If you are taking two courses, we suggest that you visit the schools twice a week for 10 weeks. It is not beneficial to you or to the classroom teacher if you try to “cram” your visits in over a shorter period of time.
- Please be aware of the school’s calendar. All of our local schools have websites which list the academic calendar for holidays and professional days. It is also your responsibility to pay attention to school closings due to inclement weather.
- Your professional dress and demeanor is of utmost importance. You must be on time, and you must be dressed like a professional. You must wear your USI nametag. Do not wear jeans, even if the teachers do. Do not show more skin than is allowed by the school’s dress code. Do not expose body piercing other than simple earrings, and do not expose tattoos of any kind. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in removal from the field experience.
- You will be notified of your assignment through your usieagles email account only. The assigned time is a just a starting place. It is a very difficult task to match your schedule with a teacher’s schedule exactly. You and the teacher are welcome to adjust the times to accommodate your schedules more conveniently.
- Remember, you are a representative of USI when you are in the schools. It is imperative that you conduct yourself in a professional manner.
- Follow your instructor’s guidelines for submitting the required paperwork for the field experience and keep copies for your own records. The evaluations from these courses are part of your packet for admission to teacher education.
