Raising Achievement through On-Court Mentoring This project will provide opportunities to students with and without exceptionalities considered at risk for school failure as a result of low income, limited familial resources, and/ or poor grades. Faculty from Teacher Education and Physical Education will work together to offer a comprehensive, inclusive after-school program to students attending Glenwood Middle School. The program will consist of academic instruction including math, reading, and social skills on the court, homework monitoring of daily assignments from their classroom teachers, and tennis instruction. Participating students will receive academic instruction from Dr. Aguinaga and her volunteer Student Teacher Candidates. Ms. Porter, USI Head Women’s Tennis Coach, and the USI women’s and men’s tennis teams will oversee the tennis instruction. At the end of the nine-week program, participants will be given a tennis racquet, balls, and shoes if they attend 80 percent of the meetings. The program will offer a structured after-school activity that provides academic, physical education and social skill instruction as well as a quality of life experience that most probably would not otherwise be afforded. |
