Camp Eagle

Austin Uebelhor

What activities/organizations are you involved in?
During my time at USI, I have been involved as a Student Ambassador and an AMIGO.  Also, I have served as secretary, vice-president, and now president of Spanish club.  I am a member of the Honors program, Relay for Life participant, and a volunteer for EDUCA, which is an off-campus ESL(English as a Second Language) program.

What are you most looking forward to about Camp Eagle?
I can't wait to meet all our new student leaders at Camp Eagle!  I'm looking forward to new friends and fun times!

How did you get started as a student leader at USI?
The first leadership position I got on campus was as a student ambassador, mainly because they'd been great when I came for my tour of campus, and it looked like a lot of fun.  From there, I begin getting involved in other organizations and groups that interested me or had made an impact on me, until I ended up where I am today.

What was the biggest change from being a leader in high school to a leader in college?
In high school, there may not always be enough leadership opportunities available for everyone who wants to step up and make a difference, and it leads to a lot of power struggles and hurt feelings.  In college, it's much easier to step up into a leadership role, and the variety of things you can take part in is much greater too.  Here at USI, we want everyone to have the opportunity to be a great student leader and really step up and show their worth.

What advice would you give a new student who aspires to be a leader at USI?
Take time for yourself.  While everyone loves good leaders, it's important to balance school work, extracurricular activities, and 'me' time.  If you're constantly running around and trying to do everything, more than likely, you're going to miss something important.  You can't be an effective leader if you overbook yourself and never distress, so it's important to have some time to relax in addition to everything else that is going on in your life.
