Support Staff Benefits
The following benefits are available to regular full-time employees working on at least a 75 percent academic or fiscal year appointment. Contact Human Resources for information on those benefits applicable to temporary, part-time, or other employee groups.
Retirement Plan - Support staff members are eligible upon employment to participate in the Indiana Public Employee's Retirement Fund. The University contributes a percentage of the employee's gross earnings to the Indiana Public Employee's retirement Fund.
Tax-Deferred Retirement Savings Annuities of a Supplemental Nature - The University will make payroll reductions for employees enrolled with an approved company. More information is available in the Human Resources office. There is no waiting period.
Group Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment - This a free benefit provided to the employee. The volume is 1.5 times the employee's annual salary with a minimum coverage of $18,000 and a maximum coverage of $75,000. Life insurance program provides for coverage of $5,000 during retirement.
Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance - Through payroll deduction, the employee has the option to select the desired amount of benefit in increments of $10,000 up to a maximum of $500,000, provided amount does not exceed five times the basic annual salary. Spouse and dependent coverage is also available.
Long-Term Disability - This policy is available to employees after three years of continuous employment. This three year waiting period may be waived if the employee has been a member of a similar long-term disability plan 60 days prior to being employed at USI. Provides monthly income and an annuity premium benefit during the period of disability.
Social Security - A system administered by the federal government through the Social Security Administration providing old age, survivor's disability, and retirement benefits. The cost is shared by the University and the employee. Effective January 1, 2008; 6.2% of salary up to $102,000 for old age, survivor's, and disability insurance, and 1.45% of all covered wages for Medicare hospital insurance.
Paychecks - Paychecks are available biweekly on Fridays. For your convenience, checks are directly deposited at the financial institution of your choice. Information and applications may be obtained in the Human Resources Department.
Holidays with Pay - New Year's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day plus the following day, Christmas plus two working days.
Winter Recess with Pay - Designated day(s) off with pay may be designated by the University between Christmas and New Year's Day.
Vacation - 10 to 20 days earned per fiscal year based on hours in active pay status each pay period. Leave time available as it is earned except during the initial probationary period. Vacation earned based on the following schedule:

The maximum accrual at any time is twice the annual allowance, and vacation time will not carry over beyond the two-year maximum accumulation.
Sick Time with Pay- Sick time with pay shall be granted to eligible support employees on the basis of 12 working days per fiscal year. Regular employees who are normally scheduled to work fewer than 37.5 hours per week will accrue sick time on a pro-rated basis. Up to five days per fiscal year may be used for illness of immediate family members. Sick time accumulates, but not more than 60 days shall be granted automatically.
Funeral Leave - Up to three days with pay granted to make arrangements for or to attend funeral of spouse, children, step-children, parents, step-parents, brothers, step-brothers, sisters, step-sisters, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, grandparents, grandchildren, or other members of family residing in immediate household. Up to two additional days travel time may also be granted. For other members of family - uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and other in-law relatives - a leave of absence with pay may be allowed up to one day with up to two additional days travel time.
Fee Waiver on Classes - Full waiver of fees for up to six credit hours for fall and spring semester and four during the summer sessions for a total of 15 hours per year for eligible employees. Fee waiver of 75 percent of student fees is provided for students who are spouses or dependent children of eligible employees. These students must be pursuing either an associate degree, a baccalaureate degree, or a master's degree. Certain miscellaneous fees as outlined in the University Handbook also will be waived. Fee waiver forms are available in Human Resources. There also may be Continuing Education classes available at no cost to the employee; forms are available in Human Resources.
Employee Assistance Program - The University offers an Employee Assistance Program to aid employees and members of their household with personal problems. The program offers assessment, short-term counseling, and referral. All services completely confidential.
University Child Care Center - Service is provided for your children while you are at work for a fee.
Dental Hygiene Clinic - The facility is located on the main level of the Health Professions Center. Employees may take advantage of the discounted prices for the following services performed by the dental hygiene students; adult and child hygiene treatments, full mouth series of x-rays, bitewing x-rays, and sealants.
Recreational Facilities - The Physical Activities Center provides periods during which the gymnasium, swimming pool, athletic fields, and other facilities are available to employees at no cost. The employee's spouse and dependents under the age of 18 (living in their home) may purchase a Pool and PAC Pass for $10 per semester.
Recreation and Fitness Center - The Recreation and Fitness Center, located south of the Physical Activities Center, is available to employees, students, and retirees. Features include 2 courts, a fitness center area with cardiovascular equipment, selectorized machines, and free weights, an elevated track, game room, lounge, and group exercise room. The facility offers a variety of activities from basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, billboards, foosball, board games, step, spin, stability ball, kickboxing, Tai Chi, Yoga, self-defense classes, personal training, and other incentive and wellness programs.
