Assistant Director of Athletics/Compliance
S. Jay Newton joined the USI Athletic staff when he was named the Assistant Director of Athletics and Compliance Coordinator in March, 2002.
As the Assistant Director of Athletics, Newton is responsible for directing
game management activities for 15 Division II athletic programs. He also
monitors and ensures compliance with all NCAA, Great Lakes Valley
Conference, and University rules and regulations.
Newton has served on several NCAA committees and is currently a member of
the Division II Great Lakes Region Advisory Committee for women's
basketball. He also serves on the NCAA Interpretations Subcommittee, which
reviews and considers legislation interpretations. Newton has been nominated
for appointment to the NCAA Legislation Committee, which determines and
incorporates new legislation and interpretations in the NCAA Manual.
From 2005 to 2007, Newton served on the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region
Advisory Committee for Men’s Soccer.
Newton came to USI from the Southern Conference in Asheville, North Carolina, where he was the championships and compliance assistant. His duties included assisting the Associate Commissioner of External Affairs, ensuring compliance with league, and NCAA rules and regulations by the conference members.
The University of South Carolina graduate received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 1996 and earned a master's degree from Murray State University in public administration in 1998. In 2001, Newton earned his law degree from the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis.
