The University of Southern Indiana baseball team swept a doubleheader with Christian Brothers University, 5-4 and 11-7, Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI raised its record 9-5 overall, while CBU fell to 7-12.
USI was led offensively on Saturday by sophomore shortstop/designated hitter Josh Perkins (Lafayette, Indiana) and senior first baseman Aaron Piening (Indianapolis, Indiana).
Perkins extended his hitting streak to 16 games, one short of the USI record of 17 by Kevin Brown in 1993, by hitting a two-run home run in game one and collecting a double and a triple in game two. For the afternoon, Perkins was three-for-five with four runs scored and three RBIs. The sophomore leads USI in hitting with a .464 average through 14 games.
Piening, who changed from pitcher to first baseman this year and is hitting .370, was three-for-five with two runs scored.
On the mound, senior right-handers Kylan Stuck (Carmel, Indiana) and Jay Winters (Shawneetown, Illinois) picked up the wins for USI. Stuck (3-1) went all seven innings for USI in game one, allowing eight hits and four runs (one earned) while striking out four.
Winters raised his record to 4-0 after going 0-5 as a junior, going six innings in game two. He allowed eight hits and three earned runs, while striking out five. Junior right-hander Steve Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) picked up his first save of the season, going three innings, allowing only one hit.
USI and CBU will resume action on Sunday, March 18, at noon for a single game. The Eagles will have a full schedule next week, playing Indiana University-Southeast on March 20 and McKendree College on March 21 at the USI Baseball Field, while traveling to Kentucky Wesleyan College for a three-game series on March 24-25.
