USI and KWC split baseball doubleheader

The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split a doubleheader with Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday afternoon in Owensboro, Kentucky. USI’s record goes to 10-9 overall, 1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while KWC falls to7-10 overall, 1-1 GLVC.

In game one, USI could not hold a 2-0 lead, falling 3-2. Senior right-hander Kylan Stuck (Indianapolis, Indiana) took the loss for the Eagles despite allowing only two hits and setting down nine of the first ten batters. The line on Stuck, who falls to 3-2 this spring, was six innings, two hits, three unearned runs and struck out six.

In game two, the Screaming Eagles bounced back with two runs in the first, one in the fifth, and three in the seventh for the 6-2 victory. USI was led on the mound by senior right-hander Jay Winters (Shawneetown, Illinois), who went all the way for the win and raise his record to a team-best 5-0.

Winters went nine innings, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned) with seven strike outs.

Offensively, USI was led in the second game by sophomore designated hitter Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana), who went two-for-five with three RBIs, and junior centerfielder Marcus Renn (Floyds Knobs, Indiana), who was two-for-four with two runs scored.

For the afternoon, Konopacki was four-for-eight, while Renn was three-for-seven.

The Screaming Eagles will finish the three game series with a single game with the Panthers on Sunday, March 25, at Panther Park. Game time is noon.
