Advising Faculty:

With Priority Registration for spring and summer terms beginning Nov 2, the Office of Distance Education would like to provide you with some resources to assist students in enrolling in distance education courses offered at USI or at one of the partner institutions through the Indiana College Network.  Please encourage your advisees to enroll during the early registration period for best course choice and availability.

What if one of my advisees is interested in Distance Education Courses?

First, look in the USI distance education course section of our list of courses. For USI students interested in registering for USI distance education courses, the process is simple. They can register via 1) their academic advisor or 2) MyUSI -- the same avenues as for on-campus courses.

What if the subject they want to take isn’t offered at USI?

Then take a look at ICN or Indiana College Network courses. They can be found here https://secure.icn.org/courses/?SearchAdvanced=1&link_type. Be sure to select INTERNET for the delivery type otherwise you might find an on campus course. Also they need to complete the registration process as soon as possible.

What if the student wants to take a Distance Education course at USI but it is full and closed?

First, make sure it is full and not capped at “0”. If it is capped at “0” then it is a permission only course and the student needs to get permission from the course instructor to take that class. Now if the course is full and closed, then the student can sign up for the course through ICN but it has to be a full course here at USI or ICN cannot register the student for the course.

Do you or your advisee need assistance on registering for an ICN course?

Please contact the Distance Education Office at distance@usi.edu or 812/465-7182.

 Tips when registering:

1.     Please keep in mind that permission-only courses (such as MATH 107X.NO1) appear as closed courses in Banner. The tip-off is the “0” in the “Cap” column. Students will need to contact that courses instructor to request permission to enroll in this course. Permission-only courses can look very similar in Banner to closed courses. Please double check the “Cap” column to see if it indeed has reached the course maximum, or if it says “0,” which indicates a permission-only course. This is permission from the instructor.

2.     Be aware that the deadline for students completed registration in ICN courses for Spring 2010 is Jan. 6. This is BEFORE our spring classes begin.

Some Helpful Resources for you and your advisees:

  • The USI Distance Learning Information for Academic Advisors, available online at http://www.usi.edu/distance/fresources.asp, explains the registration process and answers several frequently asked questions.
  • The spring and summer 2010 listings of USI distance learning courses are available at http://www.usi.edu/distance/courses.asp.

  • The most current listing of ICN partnership courses can be found at http://www.icn.org.  Students interested in taking one or more courses must complete an online Student Pre-registration FormTo begin this process, students visit the above Website and click the “MyICN” tab.

  •  The “How-To" Guide for the Indiana College Network, located at http://www.usi.edu/distance/icn.asp, provides very detailed information about the Indiana College Network, including a Step-by-Step Guide for Completing an ICN Pre-Registration Form.

  • The transferability grid of commonly requested distance learning courses has been upgraded to a website that can be found at https://in.transfer.org/cas/index.jsp . Please log in as a Guest. The majority of requested courses are found here.  Other courses may also transfer-- Mary Branson in the Registrar’s Office maintains the comprehensive transferability grid for the University and would be able to assist you.

  • Advisor approval is required for registration into distance learning courses taken through the ICN partnership.  To make this process easier, an Advisor Approval Form for ICN Courses is available in Outlook (while in Outlook, select Tools, then Forms, then Choose Form).  Either the Distance Education Office or the academic advisor can originate the form.

  • As a reminder, USI distance education course sections are coded to reflect delivery mode.  This coding enables students to make more informed decisions about the courses they select.  Here is the breakdown of codes (also found in the Section Number Codes section of the course schedule):

.NC1 means Internet-based, some Classroom attendance required

.NM1 means Internet and other Media such as CD-ROM

.NO1 (alpha “O”, not numeric “0”) means Internet Only (although some classes may require a proctored exam)

.NR1 means Internet and required videoconference attendance at Remote locations

.NV1 means Internet and Videotape/DVD rental/podcast
