Beginning fall 2008, students will be exempt from or placed into reading courses (GENS 099/GENS 151) based on their SATR/ACTR critical reading scores. Students who do not have either the SATR or the ACTR will be given the Accuplacer Reading Comprehension (RC) test.
Because students who have ten or more hours of transfer credit have typically had a course that required college level reading, these students will be exempt from a reading course. All other transfer students will be given the Accuplacer Reading Test.
At this time, enrolling in a reading class is optional, but highly recommended! I have attached a document that describes the differences between the GENS 099 (College Reading Strategies) and the GENS 151 (Applied Content Reading) courses which may be of help when advising students. If a student places into GENS 099, it is highly recommended that he/she continue the reading strand and take the subsequent reading course (GENS 151) as it focuses on the application of study/reading strategies on college level textbook reading. Students who place into GENS 099 should NOT enroll in a reading-intensive class concurrently while students who place into GENS 151 are ENCOURAGED to enroll in a college level course as a companion for applying the reading strategies.
