Before joining the Student Support Services Program in University Division in February of 2011, Mike served as Assistant Director of the Career Center at Illinois State. It was also at Illinois State University where Mike began working for the federally funded TRiO program, Student Support Services working as a Program Coordinator/Academic Advisor for four years. With the SSS program at Illinois State, Mike advised a caseload of over 100 first-generation and low-income undergraduate students on a range of issues from academic advisement, financial assistance, career exploration, and graduate school admissions. He also designed and implemented several programs focused on improving the academic, personal, and professional potential of SSS participants, including an alternative spring break trip for 20 SSS participants that included a trip to the National Civil Right Museum, a historical driving tour of the Mississippi Delta, a graduate school visit to the University of Memphis, and two service learning projects in two rural delta communities. Mike’s passion for helping student succeed began with his work teaching 8th grade social studies in the rural Mississippi Delta as a Teach for American Corps member. Mike holds a M.S. in College Student Personnel Administration from Illinois State University and is currently working on his PhD in Higher Education Administration at the same institution. He is a 2004 graduate of Indiana University with a BA in history, and served as team captain for the Men’s Track and Field Team while at IU. |
