Students helping students is what writing assistance is all about! Writing consultants will assist students with any writing assignments for any course offered by the University. Many students believe that their writing problems must be related to an English course, but that is NOT true. If the problem is related to writing or grammar, consultants will provide assistance.
Writing Consultants help students recognize strengths and weaknesses in their writing. Consultants will assist with:
Brainstorming
Focus
Thesis Development
Organization
Support
Audience
Clarity
Elaboration
Editing
Transition
The ultimate goal is to help students develop skills that they can transfer to all written work.
Students with strong writing skills are recommended by USI English faculty to enroll in English 490-Tutoring Practicum. While enrolled in the class the students-in-training learn the skills needed to be effective writing tutors, and only students who successfully complete English 490 are considered for permanent positions in Academic Skills. The training takes place under the guidance of the Academic Skills Writing Specialist, Deanna Odney, and students earn certification from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
Our OWL (Online Writing Lab) is available for students who are unable to visit Academic Skills.
