General Studies (GENS) Classes

Students use technology to
make a
presentation in their GENS 098 writing class.
Oftentimes students admitted to USI need to improve
their basic math, writing and reading skills to meet the demands of
college-level work. Academic Skills offers three non-degree-credit
courses each semester:
GENS 097
(Algebra Review)
GENS 098 (Strategies
for Writers)
GENS 099 (Strategies for College Reading)
Students needing assistance with English as a Second
Language (ESL) are encouraged to enroll in GENS 095 (ESL Writing) and
GENS 096 (ESL Reading).
In addition to the non-credit courses, Academic Skills offers
GENS
151, Applied Content Reading, a three-hour course for elective credit open to all
students who wish to prepare for a university-level reading load. This
course is often recommended as the next step for students who
successfully complete GENS 099.
GENS 105 (College Study Strategies), GENS 199 (Special Topics in Study Strategies) and GENS 111 (Career Planning) are one-hour credit courses designed to assist students with success skills.
