Mathematics
The
Department of Mathematics has mandatory placement for all entry-level
mathematics courses. Placement into an appropriate course is determined
by a mathematics placement test; therefore it is extremely important
that one’s best effort be given in taking this test. Some students may
be exempt from
taking the math placement test, based on the following:
Math SAT score of at least 640 or Math ACT score of at least 29
High
school GPA of at least a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and
Math SAT score
of least 600 or Math ACT score of at least 26
Because
students who enter courses at the proper level are more successful in
college than students who take a course that is too easy or one that is
too difficult, the Department of Mathematics
recommends all
nontraditional students take placement tests. Placement tests do not
affect admission to the University; the results of the placement tests
are used only to assist students in selecting the appropriate
entry-level math course. Starting in the right course will help you
succeed academically, which ultimately will save you time and money.
All students entering USI for the first time without transfer credit to satisfy the mathematics component of the University Core Curriculum must take the math placement test prior to enrolling in a math course.

English
The
Department of English has mandatory placement for all introductory
writing courses (GENS 098, ENG 100 and 101). Placement into an
appropriate writing course is determined by a student’s high school
GPA and Verbal SAT/ACT score. Students
who don’t have a high school GPA or SAT score will be automatically
placed into English 100.
Transfer students’ English
placement will also be based upon their transfer credit
evaluation.

further details about English placement, please contact the English
department at 812/465-7128 or

Foreign Language
The foreign language placement test is recommended for students who
studied French, German, Japanese, Latin, or Spanish in high school.
Depending on the results of the test, students may enroll in a course
ranging from the second to the fifth semester of language study.
Achieving a grade of B or better in the course in which they are placed
earns credit for all preceding courses.
Students in Japanese or Latin should contact the Department of Foreign Languages to schedule a placement interview. Students in French, German, and Spanish who take the written test on or prior to Orientation Day and who would like to discuss their test results with a language professor are also encouraged to contact the department at 812/461-5203 or by e-mail at mackay@usi.edu
The first two years of a foreign language fulfill up to nine hours of core curriculum requirements, are required for some majors, and qualify students to choose a B.A. degree.
