Placement Testing - English

The Department of English has mandatory placement for all introductory writing courses (ENG 101, ENG 100, and GENS 098). Placement into an appropriate writing course is determined by a student’s high school GPA and Verbal SAT/ENG ACT Score. Students who don’t have a high school GPA or Verbal SAT/ENG ACT score will be automatically placed into ENG 100. Transfer students’ English placement will also be based upon their transfer credit evaluation.

English placement recommendations will vary based on a student’s background. Students who are ready for college-level writing will be placed into ENG 101 (Rhetoric and Composition I: Critical Thinking). ENG 100 is available for students requiring an introductory course to Rhetoric and Composition. Finally, GENS 098 (Strategies for Writers), is a necessary first step for students needing to improve basic writing skills.
