Class Placements
MATH
Math placement recommendations are complicated and sequential. A strong
background in math may result in placement in MATH 230, Calculus I, or
MATH 115, Pre-Calc. Students prepared for College Algebra place into
MATH 111. MATH 100, Intermediate Algebra, and GENS 097, Algebra
Review, prepare students for College Algebra. Students with a Number
Power recommendation require preparatory work in arithmetic before
proceeding to Algebra Review.
ENGLISH
English placement is mandatory. Students who are ready for college-level
writing will be placed in Rhetoric and Composition I: Critical Thinking,
English 101. English 100 is available for students requiring an
introductory course to Rhetoric and Composition. Finally, General
Studies 098, Strategies for Writers, is a necessary first step for
students needing to improve basic writing skills.
READING
Reading placement has three possible recommendations. The first,
University Level, indicates that the student is capable of reading
independently and ready to enroll in reading-intense college courses.
Applied Content Reading, GENS 151, is offered for students who need assistance
making the transition to college-level textbooks and focusing on
content-area reading. College Reading Strategies, GENS 099, is designed
to help students improve reading comprehension; students should not
enroll in reading-intensive classes while taking this course.
