Academic Skills Policies

Our mission is to provide academic support services, classes, and learning assistance programs to enhance student success and the educational process at the University of Southern Indiana.
Whenever students visit the tutoring arena (ED 1111) or the Writers' Room (ED 1102), they are required to sign in and sign out on our Accutrack computer. This system enables us to collect data on how many students we serve, how much time those students spend in our programs, what services students use the most, and how many times students return for assistance. Students are welcome to request an individual report of their activity in Academic Skills, and a photo ID is required when the request is made and when the report is picked up.

Students have many choices when they come to Academic Skills for learning assistance:
Math tutoring is in the greatest demand, so tutors are available all day long.
Subject-based tutoring varies by subject and tutor availability.
Writing consultants are available in the Writers' Room, and students may schedule an appointment.
Finally, Study Skills tutors are available to help with a variety of skills, which may include working in the Academic Skills media lab.

Oftentimes, students in GENS 097 and MATH 100 need assistance with the online computer programs, CourseCompass and Math XL, required in their courses. Students are welcome to use the Academic Skills media lab to complete their assignments. Likewise, students in GENS 099, GENS 151, GENS 105, GENS 199 courses or PRAXIS preparation programs may be required to use the reading software located in the media lab, and they are able to do so with the help of a study skills tutor. In addition, students wishing to improve their skills through the direction of one of our study skills modules may also gain access to our media lab with the assistance of a study skills tutor. When visiting Academic Skills, students should be aware of the following policies:
Academic Skills is an interactive learning environment. All USI students who have a focused academic task to complete are welcome to use our tutoring services. Peer tutoring supplements but does not replace classroom instruction.
All students must sign in when they arrive and sign out when they leave. Students who sign in and leave the center for over five minutes will be logged out to ensure accurate records.
Students wanting to use CourseCompass or Math XL must also sign in on the Media Lab sheet and obtain a pass from the front desk worker. First time visitors must see a math tutor before being admitted to the Media Lab. Students must return the lab pass to the front desk when they are finished.
Students required or desiring to use reading software or watch a video must first meet with a study skills tutor. Depending on the instructional need and computer/TV availability, the study skills tutor will assist the student in signing in on the Media Lab sheet and obtaining a pass from the front desk. Students must return the lab pass to the front desk when they are finished.
No students will be admitted to the Media Lab without a pass, which must be displayed at all times in the accompanying pocket.
Students may not check email or surf the Internet. Open labs are available around campus for this purpose.
Students needing assistance with basic computer skills first must meet with the computer tutor.
Students are expected to be considerate of all students using Academic Skills. Any student who engages in disruptive behavior will be asked to leave.
Although access to the Academic Skills Media Lab is restricted, we do also enforce the Academic Computing Labs Rules of Use.
Academic Skills welcomes all students who are seeking assistance to achieve their educational goals.
