Effective July 1, 2011 The USI campus has become tobacco-free. Smoking and the use of other tobacco products will be prohibited except in personal vehicles and in designated outdoor spaces in the student housing areas. This policy applies to all University-owned, -operated, and -leased property and vehicles. "This new policy is a step forward in providing a clean, healthy working and learning environment for everyone in the campus community," President Linda L.M. Bennett said. "It’s also in line with practices of other Indiana public universities and hundreds of campuses nationwide, though I believe first and foremost that this positive step addresses the needs of the University of Southern Indiana. As an institution of higher learning, we have a responsibility to demonstrate leadership in encouraging and modeling wellness." More free tobacco cessation classes for all employees will be offered beginning in July. Each class will consist of four one-hour sessions in UC 214 from 2- 3 p.m. Class dates are Tuesdays, July 19 and 26 and August 2 and 9. Employees may use the Time to Get Fit program, with the approval of their supervisor, for this program. Forms for Time to Get Fit are available online. Individuals who participate in the cessation program are also eligible to receive a voucher for one week’s supply of over-the-counter nicotine replacement product (patches, gum, or lozenges). Group facilitators will help determine which product is best for you. Please contact Stephanie Walden-Schwake (schwake@usi.edu or 461-5269) to register for this class. If you would like help quitting tobacco, but are unable to attend this class, please contact Stephanie or Christine Tolis (catolis@usi.edu or 461-5483) for alternative options. Additional information and questions regarding the Tobacco-Free USI policy can be found here.
President Bennett says "Dr. Rochon is enthusiastic, energetic, and brings a tremendous level of excitement to the position of provost. He is known nationally and internationally for his work in the area of education and education policy issues. His record of leadership in higher education and his accomplishments in outreach and engagement make him a perfect fit for the University of Southern Indiana." Dr. Rochon will provide administrative leadership and oversight for all academic and operational components of the University, and serve as the chief executive officer in the absence of the president. His office will guide planning and implementation of a learning environment that promotes a comprehensive, critical skills-focused student experience, preparing USI students to be active and involved citizens in their communities. |
