Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, 2003 - present.  Academic Affairs is comprised of five academic colleges (Business, Education and Human Services, Liberal Arts, Science & Engineering, and Nursing and Health Professions), the Rice Library, Graduate Studies and Sponsored Research, University Division, and Extended Services.

 

Appalachian State University

 

Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, 1999 - 2003.  Personnel recruitment and review, strategic planning, and budgetary responsibilities for 16 academic departments, the Center for Appalachian Studies and The Appalachian Cultural Museum.  There are almost 300 full-time faculty and 40 staff members.  Personnel and operating budgets of $21,000,000.            Performance review conducted by Faculty Senate during the 2001-2002 year concluded that responses to faculty survey were “extraordinarily positive.”

 

Member, Governing Board, Public School Partnership.  1999 - 2003.  Strong collaboration between area high schools, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Reich College of Education at ASU.  Projects included establishing a professional development school at Ashe County, NC High School.

Established a College-wide Diversity Committee in 2001- 2003.  Developed strategies for recruitment and retention of faculty with some successes.  Committee members worked with search committees across departments to incorporate strategies that were found successful.

 

College of Arts and Sciences Advancement Council, 1999 - 2003.  In capital campaign ending in 2002, the College of Arts and Sciences raised over $8,000,000 for a variety of projects, including scholarships and endowed professorships.  This Council is composed of alumni, business, and community leaders from around the state of North Carolina and was one of the most active fund-raising groups on campus during my tenure.  Worked in collaboration with ASU’s Belk  Library, on a $1.2 million NEH challenge grant to help support Appalachian studies.

 

Chair, Rankin Science Renovation Committee, 2001- 2003.  Extensive renovation and partial rebuilding of the oldest science complex on campus.  This project necessitated close collaboration between four natural science departments and the Office of Business Affairs.

 

Member, Ad Hoc Committees (2) created by Faculty Senate. 2001-2002.  The first committee reviewed organizational issues related to equal opportunity and the grievance process.  The second committee reviewed issues related to building renovation and construction on campus.

 

Co-organizer (with Dean Bernice Johnson of North Carolina Central University) of the first meeting in at least 4 years of North Carolina system deans of arts and sciences, Chapel Hill, NC, 2001.

 

Developed “entry orientation” for new department chairs to ease their transition into departmental leadership.  I was a frequent presenter at department chair workshops sponsored by The Hubbard Center, ASU’s organization to foster faculty and staff development.

 

Northern Kentucky University

 

Chair, Department of Political Science. Appointed to a 4-year renewable term beginning July 1996.   Developed a new faculty orientation process (using video and other materials) that was adopted by the University, with a particular focus on the needs of part-time faculty.  Developed a teaching improvement process using “teaching clusters” to encourage those teaching the same course to discuss the range of topics covered and different ways to present course material.
