English As A Second Language Program
ESLI
The ESLI University Language Center on the USI campus helps prepare students with intensive English training for entrance to the University. Students in the center are integrated into the academic, social, and cultural life of the university to give them a fully enriched study abroad experience. ESLI provides each student with the opportunity to mix with North American students in the residence halls, social clubs, athletic events, school dining halls, on the basketball courts and soccer fields, etc.
Students who attend ESLI have the choice of English Only studies for students who want to study for short-term periods; or for those who qualify, admitted to the university and will take non-credit courses on arrival and be registered as USI students. When they complete the ESLI advanced level, they will be admitted to the degree program as indicated on the USI I-20.
Curriculum
The ESLI curriculum is focused on the needs and goals of each student. Our highly qualified teachers care about the progress and aspirations of their students. Personal attention and gifted teachers are our ESLI trademark.
Our students have the opportunity to live on the campus, study English and use the facilities of the university. ESLI students are immersed in an English speaking environment in the classroom, in their housing accommodations, trips, and activities.
Students learn, practice, and use English in real and practical ways that are functional and life changing.
The curriculum is divided into 3 levels, which target the students' ability and motivates the students to move through the ESLI program as quickly as possible.
In the typical day, students participate in five hours of classroom instruction and computer laboratory for a total of 25 hours per week.
Listening: Using a variety of sources, students learn effective listening skills for use both inside and outside the classroom.
Speaking/Pronunciation: Students gain confidence speaking in a variety of situations: casual conversation, formal dialogue, class presentations, etc.
Reading: Through in-class reading exercises and a personalized reading program, students learn to read for pleasure and for university studies. Exposure to a wide variety of texts provides students with opportunities to pick and choose their own materials and develop some personal preferences.
Composition: Through guided practice, students learn how to research, organize and draft academic papers of different lengths and purposes. Confidence in self and peer evaluation is encouraged, as this is equally important to a successful university experience.
Grammar: Students are encouraged to learn grammar through use. In addition to a regular class, grammar instruction is given within the context of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
