USI announces Class of 2008 Presidential Scholars! 

The University of Southern Indiana awarded its prestigious Presidential Scholarships to ten incoming freshmen of the Class of 2008. 

Students from Indiana high schools ranked first or second in their senior class are eligible for the Presidential Scholarship, which covers full tuition and housing. A stipend for books and food also is provided. The ten students selected for these competitive scholarships and brief biographies follow:  

Sam Bowles is the son of John and Rita Bowles of Marengo, Indiana. He is the salutatorian at Crawford County High School.  He plans to major in English/secondary education. 

Katherine Braun is the daughter of Pat and Mary Jo Braun of Evansville, Indiana. She is the salutatorian at Memorial High School.   For her major, Braun is considering exercise science, criminal justice or business management. 

Christi Carter is the daughter of Nancy and Dennis Sparrow and Mark Carter of Evansville, Indiana. She is the co-valedictorian at Reitz High School.  She plans to major in biology/pre-med. 

Katie Gerlach is the daughter of Pam and Chris Gerlach of Washington Indiana. She is the salutatorian at Washington High School.  She will major in journalism. 

Ashley Kaltenbacher is the daughter of John and Joyce Kaltenbacher of Holland, Indiana. She is the valedictorian at Southridge High School.  She plans to double major in elementary education and German. 

Candace Landmark is the daughter of James and Elaine Landmark of Evansville, Indiana. She is the salutatorian at Bosse High School.  She plans to major in social work. 

Michelle Price is the daughter of Mark and Linda Price of Evansville, Indiana. She is a co-valedictorian at Reitz High School.  She will major in psychology. 

Keith Rexing is the son of Daniel and Kelly Rexing of Evansville, Indiana. He is the valedictorian of Central High School. He will major in business administration. 

Timothy Scheirer is the son of Allan and Peggy Scheirer of Lafayette, Indiana. He is the valedictorian of Lafayette Harrison High School. He will major in biology/pre-med. 

Julie Verkamp is the daughter of Eugene and Cindy Verkamp of Schnellville, Indiana. She is the salutatorian of Northeast Dubois High School. Her major will be mathematics/secondary education. 


Six B/MD scholarships awarded at USI!

Six Indiana students have been selected to receive Baccalaureate/Doctor of Medicine (B/MD) scholarships at the University of Southern Indiana (USI). The B/MD scholarship program offers admission to USI and a provisional seat in the Indiana University School of Medicine, a full tuition waiver for the undergraduate program, and special opportunities to learn more about medicine as a career, including opportunities to conduct undergraduate research. It is sponsored jointly by USI and the Evansville Center for Medical Education, Indiana University School of Medicine.

To be eligible for the B/MD scholarship, students must be Indiana residents with a high school grade point average of at least 3.5 and a minimum SAT score of 1200. The average SAT score of this year's recipients is 1455.

The students come from Evansville, Greenwood, Indiana in Johnson County, Schererville, Indiana in Lake County, and Newburgh, Indiana in Warrick County.

Evansville students are Emily Kraft and Todd Wannemuehler.

Kraft is a Signature School graduate. She participated in science fairs, student government, academic super bowl, regional science bowl, and state math competition. She was active with yearbook, chorus, instrumental winds ensemble, drama, 4-H club, and Big Star/Little Star. She volunteered at Deaconess Hospital, and she served as a camp counselor, science fair mentor, and leader for ministry retreats, bible study, and youth group. She is the daughter of Ken and Mary Ann Kraft of Evansville.

Wannemuehler, a graduate of Mater Dei High School and a Lilly Scholar, was active in student council, prom planning committee, speech, peer mediation, and tennis. He is a member of the National Honor Society, history academic super bowl, and Evansville Teen Advisory Council. He received the Outstanding Achievement in Mathematics award and the Evansville Catholic Interparochial High School President's Award. He is the son of Dennis and Donna Hodges and Gene and Evelyn Wannemuehler.

The B/MD scholars' list includes twin brothers Rajeev Singh and Sanjeev Singh, graduates of Center Grove High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. Rajeev participated in National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Science Olympiad, Key Club, and Quiz Bowl.

Sanjeev was active in Quiz Bowl, the academic super bowl team, JETS science and math competition, Brain Game team, student government, National Honor Society, and Spanish National Honor Society. The brothers volunteered at Community Hospitals of Indianapolis. They are the sons of Deovrat and Vidya Singh of Greenwood, Indiana.

Other scholars are Sheiphali Gandhi of Schererville and Anupama Chundury of Newburgh.

Gandhi is a graduate of Munster High School. She participated in the academic team, Project X, S.A.D.D., Spanish Club, speech and debate team, National Honor Society, A Honor Roll, National Forensic, band, and tennis. She is the daughter of Arvind and Jayshree Ghandi of Schererville, Indiana.

Chundury is a graduate of Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities in Muncie, Indiana. She competed in piano and flute competitions, was named Student of the Month, shadowed doctors, and was a tutor and a library volunteer. She participated in soccer, track, Latin club, French club, Key club, science club, film club, Indian culture club, National Honor Society, March of Dimes, and Race for the Cure. She is the daughter of Deenadayalu and Babykumari Chundury of Newburgh, Indiana.


Deans Scholarships Awarded

The University of Southern Indiana has selected five students as recipients of Deans Scholarships for the fall semester.  

Deans Scholarships provide full tuition awards for Indiana residents and a $2,000 award for out of state students. To be considered for Deans Scholarships,  students must be ranked in the top 5% of their high school class and earn a minimum SAT score of 1100, or ACT score of 25. 

The five students selected for these competitive scholarships and brief biographies follow:

Alyssa Davis (Boonville, IN) is a graduate of Boonville High School. She is the daughter of Carl and Kimberly Davis.  Alyssa is undecided on a major. 

Jessica Doyle (Lawrenceville, IL) is the valedictorian of Red Hill High School and the daughter of James and Debra Doyle.  Jessica will pursue a degree in history.

Emily Lee (Petersburg, IN)  is a graduate of Pike Central High School and a Lilly Scholar.   She is the daughter of Beth and Tony Lee.  Emily has chosen to major in biology/pre-med. 

Molly Rahman (Ferdinand, IN) is a graduate of Heritage Hills High School.  She is the daughter of Eddie and Gloria Rahman of Ferdinand.  A first team all-state selection in volleyball, she plans to continue her career at USI.  Molly is undecided on a major.   

Kathy Wood (Lynnville, IN) is the valedictorian of Tecumseh High School and the daughter of Gordon and Susan Wood.  A two time all-state selection in softball, she plans to continue her career at USI.  Kathy will major in exercise science.

Welcome Home!

Welcome Week is your first taste of being a student at the University of Southern Indiana! It is a week full of activities and events to help you meet other new students, get adjusted to your new surroundings, and set off on the right foot to start your academic career at USI.

Welcome Week starts August 26th when most students move into on-campus housing. The events on Friday morning are academic sessions designed to get you ready for classes the following Monday. All students are expected to attend the academic events and encouraged to attend as many other events as possible to get the most out of Welcome Week.
