Letter from a parent of a current USI student

campus photoDear Parents,

It seems unbelievable that the time could have passed so fast! Your child was just beginning school, and now it is time to start planning for graduation. Such big decisions and choices to make in these months to come! As a parent of a daughter (my oldest of two children) who went through these decisions recently, I would like to tell you how she, together with my husband and I, chose the University of Southern Indiana.

You and your student have some ideas about what to look for in higher education, but there are few good schools that will fill all of your criteria. We were looking for a university that offered top-notch courses on a smaller campus. We especially were looking for one at which our daughter would be taught by professors who would know her by name and who would take a personal interest in her continued education and future. We also wanted a school that would work with us financially, so as to not leave us and our daughter with debt as a remembrance of her college years.

Living conditions were also important, since this would be considered her "home away from home" for the next four years. My daughter was not thrilled with the "closets" and long hallway concepts that we encountered at many universities.

We wanted a school that provided opportunities for leadership and socialization in a safe, welcoming atmosphere that was not threatening, and that would contribute to her college experience.

We visited several campuses and were hopeful (mom, especially) of her college selection being fairly near to home, but realized the ideal school was much farther south. We found that USI met all the criteria important to us.

I especially encourage you to check out USI--attend a Southern Hospitality Day if possible. That is when we met and fell in love with USI. I am sure that you will be impressed by the warm atmosphere, beautiful setting, housing setup, and friendly, helpful administrators and faculty. Sometimes you have to travel the extra distance to find what you are looking for—-the distance gets shorter each time you go!
My best wishes to you and your family in your future plans!

Sincerely,

Penny Diehl
