President H. Ray Hoops presented Jack L. Marr, associate
professor emeritus of biology, with the University’s 2005 Volunteer
of the Year award at the Volunteer
Recognition Dinner on August 17. The event was sponsored by
Volunteer USI.
Over the last 30 years, Marr has given extraordinary service to the
University community in his role as a volunteer for the Athletics
Department, including tutoring student athletes since his
retirement. “Dr. Marr is a great man who helped me when I needed it.
I wouldn’t have made it through anatomy without him,” said Reque
Newsome, a senior on the men’s basketball team.

In addition to tutoring, Marr donates
many hours to the Varsity Club and other athletic events. He was the
chair of the 2004-2005 Varsity Club Board of Directors and a board
member for seven years. He served as treasurer and was vice chair
for two years. Currently, Marr serves as the membership chair. He
has spent many hours preparing agendas, and planning and leading
monthly meetings. He also serves on the Athletic Department Advisory
Board.
He has accumulated 1,145 volunteer hours since July 1, 1996.
Rick Herdes, men’s basketball coach, said Marr “is a great
fan of all of our athletes and has proved invaluable to the
students, thus aiding the entire department.”
Marr began teaching at USI in 1971 as an assistant professor of
biology. He and his wife Barbara have been married for 38 years
and reside in Evansville. They are the parents of Jeffery Marr,
Scott Johnson ’85, and Rex Johnson ’86. They also have eight
grandchildren.
The Volunteer Recognition Dinner is held annually in honor of USI
volunteers who have donated 20 or more hours of volunteer service
during the previous fiscal year. Volunteers receive gifts based on
their total hours with the top recognition level at 1,000 hours. The
Volunteer of the Year is the top honor of the evening. |
