Record Enrollment this Fall

The needle on the enrollment scale at the University of Southern Indiana, hovering at the 10,000 mark the last four years, moved to 10,126 students this fall. That number marked a record enrollment for USI. With enrollment gain came an increase in student quality and growth in diversity.

Freshman enrollment, for the fifth consecutive year, is over 2,100 students. The freshman class has 60 valedictorians and three Lilly Endowment Community Scholars. This year USI awarded 1,018 departmental scholarships to academically talented students, a nine percent increase over last year, and 242 scholars are automatic qualifiers to the University’s Honors Program, up by 22 percent.

The average standardized test performance of 2039 by new Presidential Scholars and 2013 by students who earned the Baccalaureate/Doctor of Medicine (B/MD) scholarships also demonstrates quality.

Minority and international students represent over eight percent of the student population. African American students, the largest minority population at USI, represent over five percent of the total number of students.

The greater number of students (5,025) continues to come from Vanderburgh, Posey, Gibson, and Warrick counties; 1,301 students come from counties in southern Indiana.

President H. Ray Hoops said USI serves students who live and work in Indiana. He said, “These students will impact local economic development and serve the workforce in this region.”

Full-time students are in the majority (77 percent). Female students represent 60 percent of the students, a figure that has remained constant in recent years. Adult students (over 25 years of age) increased by 4.5 percent.

The enrollment figures by class are seniors, 2,066; juniors, 1,747, and sophomores, 1,752, an increase for each class. Enrollment for continuing undergraduate students is up four percent. Graduate students increased by 12 percent.

This year students are from 91 Indiana counties, 40 other states, and represent 50 foreign countries.

Dr. Robert Parrent, vice president for Student Affairs, said the international enrollment increased to 153 students this year. He said, “The number of international students has doubled over the last four years. We celebrate and welcome that growth at USI.”
