Open House for Education and Science Center
![]() |
| Students gather outside USIs Science Center expansion and
new Education Center. Construction of the facility began two years ago
and is now essentially complete. |
Alumni and the University community are invited to attend a ceremony celebrating
the public opening of the Science Center expansion and new Education Center
at 1 p.m. Sunday, October 12. Public tours will follow from 1 to 3 p.m.
Construction of the immense brick and glass structure began two years ago and is now essentially complete. With more than 150,000 square feet, the three-level $23.1 million facility is comprised of two wings and is the largest building on campus.
The Science Center expansion, called the Torrington Science Wing, joins the northwest side of the original Science Center and provides additional space for the Pott School of Science and Engineering. The Education Wing connects to the Torrington Science Wing and is home to the Bower-Suhrheinrich School of Education and Human Services, Department of Teacher Education, University Division, and Academic Skills.
In addition to classrooms and other amenities, the two new wings house research laboratories, offices, computer labs, a tutoring arena, a rooftop greenhouse, three stair towers, an OSHA-compliant chemical storeroom, an atrium, the 150-seat Couch/Renner Lecture Hall, and two indoor wells for groundwater monitoring.
The Torrington Science Wing honors W. Paul Torrington, the late Mead Johnson
executive who contributed major gifts benefiting USI students in the sciences.
The Science Center and Education center also includes the Melvin and Anne
Denner Anatomy and Physiology Laboratories, named in honor of two former
professors and given by their alumni; the Walter F. Sill Geology Seminar
Room, named for a late prominent geologist; the Charles J. Bertram Mathematics
Education Laboratory, named in honor of the late professor and administrator
and given by his wife Mary Alice; the Frank L. Stanonis Paleontology and
Sedimentary Geology Laboratory, named for the former dean of the Pott School
of Science and Engineering; and the Couch/Renner Lecture Hall is named for
long-time University supporters Rebecca Nunn Couch and her sister, the late
Aline Nunn Renner.
