Campus Loop Road Realignment
Phase I

This map describes a plan to realign the loop road that surrounds the campus core, to alleviate pedestrian vehicular conflicts, make traffic flow better, and improve the appearance of campus.

The plan involves the creation of a new 2-way roadway (solid red line) running along what is now the rear of the largest campus parking lot, the selective reconfiguration of some of the curves on the western side of the current loop (also shown in a solid red line) and the widening of much of the existing roadway on the west side. The loop road on the west side will become two way, after widening, making the entire loop 2-way. The segment of existing University Boulevard, that runs from the Lloyd Expressway, to the old Library, will continue to exist, but will have one of its roadways removed. The remaining roadway will be made one-way in the southern direction and primarily serve visitors to the campus.

Taken together, these improvements should make walking from the main parking lot to the campus core much safer.

Other details of the plan:

Entry to the main parking lot on the east side of campus will only be from the new loop road segment that would be built just to the east of what is now the rear of the parking lot.

There would be no entry to the main parking lot from the one-way segment of University Boulevard between the Lloyd Expressway and the old Library.

The plan channels most main parking lot traffic to the new roadway, removing it from University Boulevard.

All projected growth of the campus for the next decade will fit within the Phase 1 loop road that would be built under this plan, preserving the compact, pedestrian character of the campus core.
