Student Advising
Assigned Advisors
Upon entry into the College of Business, students are assigned to a faculty advisor who helps them plan their course of study to graduation. Students meet with their advisors at least once each semester typically during priority registration to plan their courses for the upcoming semester. Assigned faculty advisors are changed when students change their major program of study or when students are better served with a different advisor.
Freshmen
It is important for freshmen to meet with their advisors early in the first semester. This meeting presents an opportunity to get acquainted, talk about progress in classes, review business programs, address questions, and discuss career plans. Advisors also assist during the priority registration process when students can register for their next semester’s classes.
The following required courses should be completed during the freshman year:
| CIS 151 | Computer Applications in Business | 3 hrs |
| CMST 101 | Introduction to Public Speaking* | 3 hrs |
| MATH 111 or equivalent | College Algebra or equivalent* | 3-4 hrs |
Sophomores
The following required courses should be completed during the sophomore year:
| ACCT 201 | Accounting Principles I | 3 hrs |
| ACCT 202 | Accounting Principles II | 3 hrs |
| ASBE 231 | Business Communication | 3 hrs |
| MATH 215 | Survey of Calculus | 3 hrs |
| ECON 208 | Microeconomics* | 3 hrs |
| ECON 209 | Macroeconomics* | 3 hrs |
| ECON 241 | Global Economic Issues* | 3 hrs |
| PSY 201 | General Psychology* | 3 hrs |
Psychology 201 is not required of majors in Business Education.
*These courses satisfy University Core requirements.
Meet with Advisor for Course Planning
It is important that students meet with their advisors every semester prior to the beginning of priority registration. These planning sessions afford students an opportunity to discuss academic progress and career plans. A review of the specific major requirements ensures that courses will be taken in the proper sequence. Otherwise students might not graduate when they plan. Some courses, particularly the upper level courses, are not offered every semester. It is helpful to develop a plan to graduation – an outline of what courses should be taken in what order.
Transfer-Credit Policy
Course credits earned from accredited colleges and universities will be accepted as transfer credit subject to the following guidelines:
- Only courses with grades of C or better will transfer (minus grades from other colleges and universities will be upgraded to the standard letter grade (ex. B- to B). Grade point averages do not transfer.
- Orientation courses will not be accepted as transfer credit, nor will coursework from academic departments which have no counterpart in the USI curriculum.
- Noncredit courses earned at previous colleges or universities will not transfer.
- Even though credit hours are transferable, the transferred hours may not necessarily apply toward a particular degree program. The applicability of credits toward a particular degree, as well as the University Core Curriculum, can be determined in counsel with the appropriate departmental advisor.
- A maximum of 64 credit hours may be transferred from accredited community and/or junior colleges.
A student’s overall transfer grade point average will not
be recorded on the student’s transcript. Consequently, a
transfer student will establish a grade point average from
the University of Southern Indiana based only on courses
taken at this University. A transfer student must, however,
meet the requirements for continued enrollment
which correspond to the sum of the total transfer hours
accepted and total hours attempted at this University.
Also, all hours attempted at previous universities will be
summed with courses taken at this University in computing
graduation honors.
Courses in advanced business and economics subjects which have been taken at other institutions in the freshman and sophomore years will not be accepted as equivalents of the courses offered at the University unless the student passes College of Business special examinations in such subjects. Credit from non-collegiate organizations is not acceptable for application to meet business or economics course requirements of the College of Business programs. In some cases the experience from these programs may provide the basis for applying for a special credit examination (see Credit by Examination).
Requirements for Graduation
Meeting graduation requirements is each student’s responsibility. Each student who is a candidate for a degree must meet the General Requirements of the University for Graduation.
In addition, students pursuing a major or minor offered by the College of Business must fulfill a minimum of 31 hours in the Business Core. These requirements are for all students majoring in accounting and professional services, business administration, business education, computer information systems, finance, management, and marketing.
The College of Business major and minor program requirements are revised periodically. The revised requirements are published on updated business program check sheets available from the Office of the College of Business or online on the various degree pages. Students may choose to meet the requirements that were in place when they declared their business major or the requirements of a revised program.
Students who change their major program of study to another major within the college must meet all the requirements of their new major. The dean of the College of Business must approve petitions for permission for exceptions to any program requirement.
Business majors or minors who wish to take courses at other institutions must obtain approval of the dean before the course is taken to assure the credits will transfer.
Track your progress toward graduation
Students can track their progress toward graduation through a Degree Evaluation which is available through MyUSI.
The Degree Evaluation was developed to assist students and advisors as they plan courses to fulfill graduation requirements. A degree evaluation outlines a student’s specific degree requirements and tracks their progress toward the fulfillment of those requirements. Both USI and transfer credits are included, and the evaluation indicates whether categories are satisfied or unsatisfied. Unsatisfied categories list the acceptable courses from which to select. Evaluations are routinely refreshed to reflect record changes (drop/adds, change of major, priority-registration, etc.). Students can view their evaluation any time of the year via MyUSI (www.usieagles.org). Academic advisors can also access their advisees' degree evaluation and can recommend the most appropriate courses.
"What-If" evalutions can also be run by students considering a change in academic program. This is a useful tool to determine how completed courses will be applied to a new major.
To access your Degree Evaluation, log on to MyUSI at www.usieagles.org; select Academic Services, Administrative Services, Student & Financial Aid, Student Records, Degree Evaluation, Submit an Audit. You can then run an evaluation for your current degree program or use the What-If Analysis to see how your courses would apply if you changed majors.
Credit by Examination
The University credit by examination program is designed to recognize superior learning experiences and translate that experience into college credit. It helps a student gain recognition for what the student knows and can do irrespective of how, where, and when the knowledge was obtained. Candidates for credit by examination need to contact the department of the specific exam subject.
