Instructions for Creating and Publishing Your Own Web Pages

by Dr. Abbey Foroughi

1.    Creating Your Own Web Pages

Web pages are text files in which HTML is used to specify the format of the page, the hyperlinks, and the images displayed. If you know the html language, Java, etc., you will be able to make more sophisticated features on your web page. But, you do not have to know these languages to create a simple or moderately sophisticated web page. Web page editors, some of which have Wizard, a sort of template, can guide you through the process of creating a web page. Wizards are helper dialog boxes that ask you to respond to questions meant to lead you through the process of creating your web page. You can choose from various web page layouts and styles, and the Wizard will construct a basic page for you.

There are numerous web editors, such as FrontPage, Word, Netscape ,  and Mozilla. etc.

Also, there are free Internet web sites, such as  Geocities-- http://geocities.yahoo.com/ . You will have to register for an account with them. Geocities has a Wizard that can both create your Own Web Pages and publish them.

The next step is to publish your web page.

2.    Publishing Your Web Page

After creating your web page, you need to publish it, so that people can access it through the Internet. This process involves transferring your html files and your graphic and/or sound files to a server that is connected to the Internet.

There are many ways to publish your web page.

1)   If you already have your own server, you can transfer your files to it.

2)   If you have an Internet service provider, such as AOL, Evansville.net, or others, you have to follow their specific instructions for uploading your files.

3)  You can publish a web page using MyUSI . Login and click on Campus Life. Go to School Resources and click on "Working on your web site". An example http://web.usi.edu/

4)   Use free Internet web sites, such as  Geocities-- http://geocities.yahoo.com/ . You will have to register for an account with them. Geocities has a Wizard that can both create and publish your web page, or just upload all your web page files { text files ( .htm or .html ) and picture files ( .gif and .jpeg )}.

Note: I recommend using this 4th option, as it is the easiest

Warning:  Web browsers files are upper and lower case sensitive. You must be consistent in both spelling and in the use of upper or lower case letters for your web page files, or your web page will not work. I recommend that you use lower case for all file names and extensions so you won’t forget.
