Dr. Gary Black is Assistant Professor of Production and Operations Management. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, an M.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Tennessee, and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University. He is a licensed professional engineer in Tennessee.

Prior to coming to USI, Dr. Black was an Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering at Tennessee Technological University. Prior to that, Dr. Black worked for 17 years as an Industrial Engineer in the electronics manufacturing industry at large corporations such as Raytheon Company and Siemens Corporation.

Dr. Black's teaching interests include all aspects of quantitative analysis, specifically operations management, operations research, decision analysis and statistics. His research interests pertain to adaptive heuristics for production control applications. He has published his research in the Journal of Scheduling and is in process of publishing within the International Journal of Production Research and the European Journal of Operational Research. He belongs to several professional organizations and has served as a referee for various journals.
