Gaining Remote Access with Windows NT/2000/ME
How to use USI as my ISP - password protected for Faculty and Staff only
The USI Computer Center does not provide off campus installation or set
up. These instructions are written for Microsoft Windows NT/2000/ME but steps may vary
depending on your modem manufacturer.
What you will need
- An IBM PC or compatible system running Windows NT/2000/ME
- A modem
- Dial-up networking must be installed on your computer
- Client for Microsoft Networks must be installed
- TCP/IP must be installed as a part of the computers network components
- A Domain/Exchange account (mailbox assigned to USI faculty and staff by Computer Center) and password
Dial Up Networking (checking and installing) To see if Dial-Up Networking is installed, do this:
- Click the My Computer icon
- Click Control Panel
- Look for folder labeled Network & Dial-Up Connections
If you did not find Dial-Up Networking, add it by doing the following
- Start/Settings/Control Panel
- Click Add-Remove programs icon
- Click Window Setup TAB
- Highlight Communications (don't uncheck the box) and then click Details
- Check the Dial-Up Networking box, click OK, OK
- The system may want to reboot - you may need your Windows NT/2000/ME CD.
Set dial-up networking for USI-PPP
- Click My Computer, Control Panel, Network & Dial up Connections
- Click Make/Add New Connection
- Click Next - a Wizard will start
- Choose Dial up to Internet using phone line, Next
- Choose Set up manually/Connect through LAN, Next
- Choose Connect though Phone line and modem, Next
- Select Your Modem (this will differ for everyone).
- Type a name for the Computer you are dialing: USI
- Enter the PPP Phone number (812- 465-7185)
- Uncheck "Use area code and dialing rules"., Next
- User name: enter your logon ID (example: jsmith), don't enter password, Next
- OK to continue without password
- Connection Name: USI
- Select NO to Internet Mail account, Next
- Uncheck Connect Immediately, FINISH
- RIGHT Click on USI dial-up icon
- Choose Properties
- Networking Tab
- Type of Dial-up Server: PPP:Windows 95/98/NT/2000 Internet
- Highlight Internet Protocol TCP/IP (and check it, if it's not checked), click properties
- Obtain an IP automatically Checked
- Obtain DNS server Automatically: Checked
- Click Advanced Button, General Tab
- Use default Gateway.. Checked
- Use IP Header Compression Unchecked
- Click OK, OK, OK
- RIGHT Click on USI dial-up icon
- Select "Create a Shortcut" to place a shortcut to USI on the desktop. Double click USI shortcut on the desktop to start dial-up networking.
