Gaining Remote Access with Windows 95/98

How to use USI as my ISP - password protected for Faculty and Staff only

The USI Computer Center does not provide off campus installation or set up. These instructions are written for Microsoft Windows 95/98 but steps may vary depending on your modem manufacturer.

What you will need

  1. An IBM PC or compatible system running Windows 95/98
  2. A modem
  3. Dial-up networking must be installed on your computer
  4. Client for Microsoft networks must be installed
  5. TCP/IP must be installed as part of the computers network components
  6. A Domain/Exchange account (mailbox assigned to USI faculty & Staff by Computer Center) and password.

Dial Up Networking (checking and installing)
To see if Dial-Up Networking is installed, do this:
  1. Click the Start button
  2. Point to Programs
  3. Point to Accessories
  4. Look for folder labeled Dial-Up Networking

If you did not find Dial-Up Networking, add it by doing the following

  1. Start/Settings/Control Panel
  2. Click Add-Remove programs 
  3. Click Window Setup TAB
  4. Highlight Communications (don't uncheck the box) and then click Details
  5. Check the Dial-Up Networking box, click OK, OK
  6. System may want to reboot. - you may need your Windows 95/98 CD.

Installing TCP/IP (you may need your Windows 95/98 CD)

  1. Start/Settings/Control Panel
  2. Click Network icon
  3. Click Configuration TAB
  4. Look for TCP/IP in the list of services & protocols.
  5. If TCP/IP is not listed do the following
    • Click Add
    • Select Protocol
    • Select Microsoft in the Manufacturers
    • Click TCP/IP in the Network Protocols
    • Click Add/OK
    • System may want to reboot
Set dial-up networking for USI-PPP
  1. Click My Computer, Dial-Up Networking
  2. Click Make/Add New Connection 
  3. Type a name for the Computer you are dialing: USI
  4. Verify that "Select a Modem" displays the modem you intend to use.
  5. Click Next
  6. Enter the PPP Phone number (465-7185)
  7. Click Next and Finish (special options to disable call waiting *70 prefix)
  8. In the Dial-Up Networking window, RIGHT click the USI icon and select Properties
  9. Click Server Type
  10. Type of Dial-Up Server should be PPP:Windows: 95/98/NT/2000 Internet
  11. In Advanced Options, Enable Software Compression should be the ONLY checked item.
  12. In Allowed Network Protocols TCP/IP should be the ONLY checked item
  13. Click on TCP/IP Settings button
    SERVER ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS -Checked
    OBTAIN DNS Server automatically -Checked
    Use IP Header Compression - Unchecked
    Use DEFAULT GATEWAY on Remote Network - Checked
    Click OK a couple of times to get out of the setup.
  14. Click CONFIGURE on the USI Properties dialog (there might be some variance here depending on the type of modem)
  15. Click Options Tab
    Bring up a terminal window AFTER dialing Checked
    ALL options in the DIAL CONTRol frame blank
    Display modem status Checked
    OK, Next
  16. RIGHT Click the USI Icon
  17. Select "CREATE SHORTCUT" to place a shortcut to USI on the desktop.
  18. Double click USI shortcut on the desktop to Start Dial-up Networking
