Gaining
Remote Access with Windows XP
How to
use USI as my ISP - password protected for Faculty and Staff only
The USI
Computer Center does not provide off campus installation or set up.
Instructions will vary with different Operating systems (Windows 98, ME,
XP...), modem, Office version (97, 98, 2000, XP). These instructions assume
that your modem is installed correctly.
Dial
Up Networking
1. Start/Control Panel/(category view)Network and Internet Connections
2. Setup or change your Internet Connection
3. Click Setup
4. The Connection Wizard will start automatically – Click Next to start the Wizard
5. Select Connect to the Internet, Next
6. Select Set up my Connection Manually, Next
7. Connect using Dial-up Modem, Next
8. Connection Name/ISP Name=USI, Next
9. Enter Phone Number: 465-7185 , Next
10. Username = your logon ID (example: jsmith), Don’t enter password,
Leave 3 checkboxes checked, Next
11. Click Add Shortcut to Desktop button, Finish, (Exit) Return to desktop
Making
a Connection to USI
1. Double click the connection icon on the desktop OR Click Start, Connect
to, USI
2. A window will appear with your dial-in formation – click DIAL button
3. When connection is made this window turns into a small icon and moves to
the system tray (by the time in lower right corner).
Closing
a Connection
When finished with your connection, right click on small icon (in system
tray) and click Disconnect.
STOP! At
this point you should have an internet connection. You should be able to read
your e-mail using Outlook Web Access (OWA) http://exchhub.usi.edu
IF you want to use Outlook
to read your e-mail, and you have Office installed or have the CD, continue.
Install
Microsoft Outlook/Office for Exchange
1. Install MS Outlook/Office (Start/Run D:\Setup – where D: is your CD Rom drive) You can check out the Office CD(s) at
Rice library
2. You may have to reboot after installation.
Set up
Outlook Email – assuming Outlook/Office 2000 or 2002
1. Start Outlook
2. Wizard should start (see below if no wizard)
3. Information Services: Check MS Exchange Server (only), Next
5. Server: exchhub.usi.edu
mailbox: your logon ID (example: jsmith), Next
Travel – NO, Next, Finish
If Wizard
doesn’t start – Click
Tools, Options, Mail Delivery (or Mail Services)
Click Reconfigure Mail Support
Select Corporate or Workgroup – exit Outlook,
Click Start, Control Panel, Mail, Show profiles, Add, enter you name, Next
Only Services should be Microsoft Exchange Server - See above – setting up Outlook email…
When
Outlook starts, DOMAIN = USI (password IS case sensitive!)
