Telecommunication Services consists of a Telephone Service supervisor, a first and second shift telephone operator, and two maintenance technicians. This department also utilizes student workers for office work, switchboard operator and maintenance.
The USI telephone switchboard serves all administrative, faculty, and staff offices. The switchboard telephone number is 464-8600. The regular hours for the switchboard to be open are: Monday - Friday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Incoming calls to 464-8600 are handled after-hours by an automated system which provides options to obtain information, including remaining on the line for operator assistance.
TTY service is provided in the Counseling Center and the University Center for hearing impaired students.
A monthly bill showing the charges for your long distance calls will be sent to your campus address.
Paying your bills by the due date helps keep down the cost of your long distance calls. Therefore, each monthly bill is to be paid in full, by the due date. Please make your check payable to the University of Southern Indiana. Include the remittance slip and your student identification number on all payments and correspondence. Payments may be made by mail, at the cashier's window on the lower level of the Orr Center, the Cashier's Office drop box, or at the drop box on the first floor of the Orr Center.
On an average day, the communication system processes 30,000 off-campus calls. Presently, USI's communication server (switch) is connected to the public network with digital T1 technology.
In a normal year, the switch processes 1,300,000 off-campus outbound calls, and 800,000 in-bound calls. To support this traffic we presently have 13 T1 lines installed. As traffic pattern and usage levels have changed we have had to adjust the trunking arrangements. Some of the factors affecting these changes are the addition of new dorms and campus buildings.
