The Institute for Online Teaching
and Learning began in the summer of 2001 with eleven USI faculty members
attending a two-weeks of intensive training during the university's first
summer session. Participants were introduced to the university's course
management software system, Blackboard, and attended presentations and
discussions about effective teaching and learning techniques using technology.
Topics included student-centered learning, learning styles, copyright and
intellectual property issues, engaging the distance learner, interactivity in
the online classroom, and more.
Following the successful pilot Institute, the university received a grant in
the amount of $58,280 from SBC Ameritech to support the development of
additional courses and faculty training for the 2002-03 Institute activities.
Eleven other faculty members attended the intensive summer training in May
2002 and began course development for online delivery during the 02-03
academic year.
Faculty members interested in participating in the 2010 Institute for Online
Teaching and Learning should complete an Institute Application.
