PED 499 - Practicum Instruction Sheet

Practicum Exercise Science/General Physical Education

Welcome to the Practicum experience for Physical Education/Exercise Science students at the University of Southern Indiana.  The Practicum (PED 499) provides students with valuable supervised practical experience working for a specified period of time.  It will take years of experience and plenty of networking to obtain your “Dream Job”, and it all begins with your first practicum.  Success is most likely to occur when preparation meets opportunity.  It is not enough just to be in the right place at the right time, but it is also important to be prepared!!!  Your Practicum is your opportunity to prepare for the future.  Good luck and make the most of your experience!

  1. Pre-Requisites:  Students must complete required courses in major plus the following classes:  PED 383, 387, 391, 394, 481.

  2. Internship Site:  Students are responsible for securing an internship approved by the Facility Coordinator. Internship Site

  3. Application:  The internship application should be completed and submitted to the internship faculty supervisor at least two weeks before an internship begins. Practicum Application (pdf)

  4. Resume and cover letter:  A current resume and cover letter must be submitted with completed application form.

  5. Orientation:  An orientation is conducted at the beginning of each semester.  Student interns must attend the Practicum orientation to review the syllabus, course requirements, and course & learning goals.  The student will also receive a Student Practicum Handbook and necessary material to finish the internship in an appropriate timeframe.  Attendance is mandatory.  Orientation dates TBA.

  6. Letter and Materials:  A letter and materials will be sent to the site supervisor once the students complete the first four requirements mentioned above on this internship instruction sheet.  The packet of materials will include the following:

    1. Letter to the faculty coordinator of your internship stating what is expected of the intern.

    2. An internship work agreement in which the supervisor will review and sign, then return to faculty supervisor no later than one week from the date it was sent.  The faculty supervisor will send the paperwork to the internship coordinator to sign and file in the proper place.

    3. The internship work agreement will address the following:

      • You agree to act professionally and ethically while on the site.
      • The site agrees to give you substantial work-learning experience.
      • You will maintain a daily log or journal, and/or documents to add to your final paper or project.
      • The site agrees to give you at least 150 hours of work, which is required for the internship.
