Bridgette Nelson: Future Teacher

Who is the biggest influence in your personal life?
“Probably my Mom. As I get older, I see that I am starting to say to same things she said to me. I do the same things she does. I am turning into my mom!”

Who was your favorite childhood teacher and how did they influence you?
“That would by my 4th and 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Norman. She was the first African American teacher I ever had. She made me excited to come to school. After any breaks, even the weekend, I was like; ‘Yay! Time to go to school! I wonder what we are going to do today?’ I wasn’t excited about school until Mrs. Norman.”

Why did you choose USI?
“My mom encouraged me to come. At first I was going to go to IU with all my friends. She thought I should step out of my comfort zone. When I came a visited the campus and saw that it was so pretty and everyone was so friendly and warm, I knew that it was a good choice.

What is the best thing about USI?
“I like the fact that the classmates I had my freshman year still recognize me. Although we don’t have the same majors, if we see each other across campus, we always stop and catch up with each other. Going to a smaller school makes it easier to build bonds with classmates.”

What is the best thing about college life?
“Having the freedom you never thought you would have.”

What is the hardest thing about college life?
“Managing your time right. I spend a lot of time in the library through the week. The librarians all know me by name. I do all my studying, research, and writing papers so I can chill on the weekends. “

What is your favorite college class?
“PED 295 with Kamla. It is a class on how to be a physical education teacher. Kamla forced us to become good friends in that class. We all became very close. When I see one of my former buddies from that class in one of my current classes, I am so excited to see them again.”

What kind of teacher do you want to be?
“As an education major, I have really enjoyed the learning process. I don’t mind all the studying and hours spent in the library. As a teacher, I want to pass that on to my students, the love of learning. It will be a snowball effect. They will be enthusiastic about coming to class, they will love to learn, they will want to make good grades and they will want to have a better future for themselves.

What is your dream job?
“ I would like to go back to Indianapolis and teach at my old school, Pike Township. It was a great school. I love the fact that it was so multicultural.”
