Dr. Michael Slavkin is an Associate Professor of Education, and has been with the Department of Teacher Education since 2000. Dr. Slavkin is the Director of Graduate Education for Teacher Education, and is the NCATE accreditation coordinator for the department.
Dr. Michael Slavkin also serves as the evaluation coordinator for Learn and Serve - Indiana initiatives. Dr. Slavkin has coordinated service-learning at an Indiana dropout prevention center and alternative school for 4 years. He received his Ph.D. in educational psychology with an emphasis in development and learning, cognition, and instruction from Indiana University – Bloomington. He is the father of two beautiful children and husband to a patient high school special education, social studies, and language arts teacher!
Dr. Slavkin has published numerous articles in the areas of service-learning, authentic assessment, and juvenile firesetting, and has published two books: Juvenile Firesetting: An Exploratory Analysis (2000) and Authentic Learning: How an Understanding of the Brain Shapes the Learning of Students (2004). His teaching interests relate to authentic learning strategies, authentic assessment approaches, and the design of service-learning projects that expand social activism and student empowerment.
