Tips on service
learning from start
to finish:
Planning:
(1)Work with the Service
Learning Committee to identify partners and project well ahead of this
semester. (2)
Develop project and course integration collaboratively with partner(s). (3) Set learning
goals for students. (4) Plan time for reflection,
as it deepens learning. (5) Plan time for
revisions of output, so students can be involved as much as possible in final
project.
Project Execution:
(1) Ask for assistance needed from the Service Learning
Office (2)Provide
needed training to students. (3) If it is a group
project, anticipate issues with group dynamics. (4) Stay in
touch with partners. (5) Allow time for reflection.
(6) Be flexible!
Project Completion/Follow-up
(1) Arrange for completion of
product. (2) Determine best way to deliver product
to partner. (3) Ask students and partner for feedback.
Assistance available:
The goal of the USI Service
Learning Committee is to enhance learning in ways that will invigorate
students and simultaneously provide valuable community service. Here
are some things we can do to help:

Provide you with information and resources regarding service learning

Assist with the training of students

Assist with logistics, such as transportation or delivery of material

Assist with preparation and duplication of reports
-
Assist with small financial needs
-
Respond to and complete your requests for assistance in a timely manner

Survey you and your students at the end of the semester
-
Send evaluation & your consent to your community partner for feedback when the project is completed
