There are many ways that service learning can
help you as a student. The memories it can bring and the benefits
you gain are valuable throughout life.

THE BENEFITS!
Ways students can get involved in
the community at USI:
Many of the ways for students to get
involved here are through Co-Curricular
programs. Organizations like the Volunteer USI Program,
http://www.usi.edu/volunteer/ and various clubs and
organizations. Many clubs and
organizations are involved with co-curricular Service learning projects (ex.
Greek life, Colleges Against Cancer, AMIGOs, etc.). Check out all of
these clubs at:
http://www.usi.edu/StudentOrganizations/join_an_organization.asp
Internships can be another great way to get involved with service learning. Internships allow for a community connection to start early, and by working with the partners the student should gain a better sense of what they could do to help and what they might like to do in the future. For further information on internships please visit http://www.usi.edu/careersv/students/intern_coop.asp.
Tips for approaching service learning:
(1) Be assertive. (2) Take the
initiative, both in the community and in the classroom. (3)
Be a leader and a decision-maker. (4) Help
with the assessment of the project and the planning of follow-up
activities. (5) Contribute to the project as if it
were a regular job. (6) Be on time and learn the
rules and regulations. (7) At the end of the
project take time to reflect on what was learned and how it could be
better next time.
